Endorsement: Illinois House, District 49 Maura Hirschauer
Two former teachers who speak passionately about the people of Illinois and the issues facing them are vying to represent District 49 in the Illinois House.
Both Democratic incumbent Maura Hirschauer and Republican Hannah Billingsley have the kind of backgrounds and energy that would make them attractive to voters in a district that takes in parts of Aurora, Bartlett, Batavia, Elgin, Geneva, Hanover Park, Naperville, South Elgin, Streamwood, Warrenville, Wayne and West Chicago.
We endorsed Billingsley, of West Chicago, in the Republican primary. A businesswoman, she speaks with conviction about fiscal matters. When it comes to immigration, a hot-button topic for many Republicans, she approaches it with much-needed nuance and empathy, praising Illinois for its compassion but noting that leaders must prioritize the needs of their residents.
While we are impressed by Billingsley, Hirschauer’s grasp of the issues is broader. That, coupled with her experience, gives her the edge.
Seeking her third term, Hirschauer — an ardent gun control activist — was the chief sponsor of Illinois’ assault weapons ban, and she sponsored additional legislation aimed at public awareness regarding gun storage. The Batavia resident says she still has more work to do on gun control and other issues, including working to find budget solutions while keeping the paying down of pension debt top of mind.
Hirschauer is endorsed.
