Why are you running for this office, whether for re-election or election for the first time? Is there a particular issue that motivates you? If so, what?

As a newly retired educator, I have witnessed firsthand the significant impact of mental health issues on student attendance and learning. Factors such as digital media and the effects of COVID-19 have exacerbated these challenges.

It is essential that we work to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health by educating our youth, parents, and educators on how to identify issues like depression and anxiety. The consequences of untreated mental health problems can lead to increased truancy and behavioral issues, undermining our students’ potential. Cuts to mental health programs could jeopardize the vital work already being done in this area.

If you are an incumbent, describe your main contributions. Tell us of any important initiatives you've led. If you are a challenger, what would you bring to the board and what would your priority be?

Teaching young teens teaches requires calm, resilience, creativity and attentiveness and compromise. After watching a number of Kane County Board meetings, I believe I will need to bring all of these skills to the board position.

Our current board needs members who will work to support Kane County employees and programs. Mental health programs may be defunded if extremists are allowed to financially starve the government. Currently our programs are helping people with mental health concerns get the help they need and deserve. A recent article in the Chicago Tribune outlined the need for increased services according to our own youth.

Keeping these services well-funded is essential for the community, and electing board members who understand the importance of supporting public services is key to protecting them. I will be one of those board members.

Describe your position regarding the balance between county spending and revenues as it exists today, then describe the chief threats you see looming in the future and how the county should deal with them.

While the budget is clear and transparent, it’s concerning that they haven’t increased tax revenue in over a decade, especially with reliance on federal aid during the pandemic. State mandates add another layer of complexity, and it’s critical to recognize that underfunding can hinder effective governance.

The narrative around taxes can easily become distorted, especially when there are agendas at play. It’s crucial for the community to have accurate information about how funding decisions affect local projects and services. Transparency in communication can help combat misinformation and ensure that the board can continue to serve its constituents effectively.

Does there need to be more bipartisanship and cooperation on the county board? If yes, what would you do to help make that happen?

Absolutely! Prioritizing communication among board members is essential for fostering bipartisanship. When everyone is focused on serving the constituents, it creates an environment where collaboration thrives. Viewing a seat as a position of service rather than power helps to build trust and encourages more productive dialogue. This approach not only strengthens decision-making but also ensures that the needs and voices of the community are front and center.

What role should the county play in combating the opioid crisis?

This is an important topic and appropriate for county action. Addressing the opioid crisis requires a multifaceted approach that combines public health strategies, policy changes, and health care interventions. Two key areas of support are offering a plan which combines therapy and drug intervention, and reducing stigma through education.

What role should the county play in increasing affordable housing in the region?

It's a great initiative to address the housing affordability crisis, especially for young people trying to enter the market. Conducting housing needs research followed by stakeholder engagement could make a real impact in our county.
