Antioch to waive building permit fees for disabled vets

Building permit fees for disabled veterans in Antioch will be waived starting Jan. 1.

State law waives fees for disabled veterans who apply for a building permit to make a modification related to their disability. Antioch’s version applies to any type of a building permit, regardless of whether it is related to an accommodation for the disability.

A building permit fee generally is generally 2% of the project cost, with a minimum fee of $62, according to the village. Staff brought the state requirement to the village board, which expanded the scope after discussing the pending law.

“It’s a small gesture, but it’s one way we can show our appreciation for their service and everything they continue to contribute to our community,” Mayor Scott Gartner said in a news release.

Permit paperwork still must be submitted and veterans or their caregivers need to provide proof of their veteran disability status and the improvement needed when they apply.

A permit application can be obtained at Antioch Village Hall, 874 Main St., or https://www.antioch.il.gov/. A list of required building permits can also be found on the village website, www.antioch.il.gov.
