Separate opinion, fact

The Opinion page is rife with writers stating opinion as fact.

Opinions rely on personal values and are not provable (Lemons are the best). Facts are proved or disproved through objective evidence (Helene was a Category 4 hurricane).

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and differing opinions lead to spirited discussion. What is detrimental to discussion, especially during this polarized political climate, is when unprovable “facts” enter in. It can’t be proven that Trump will destroy democracy or that Harris is a communist. Yet people cling to these opinions as unwavering truths, never bothering to check their truthfulness.

We can do better. State your opinion, support it with your feelings and values not unverifiable “facts.”
