Endorsement: Martwick for Illinois Senate, District 10
Arguing that Illinois’ General Assembly needs change, Republican Jon Luers is taking on Democratic state Sen. Robert Martwick in the 10th District, which includes Chicago’s far Northwest Side and extends to Rosemont, Schiller Park, River Grove and Norridge.
Luers, however, does not make a strong a case for replacing Martwick, and we find some of the challenger’s positions concerning. Luers, for example, dismisses climate change as “not a real problem,” calling it a “convenient political ploy” and adding that no government actions are needed to address what his opponent rightly recognizes as a serious threat.
Luers takes a similarly hard line on other issues, including Illinois’ assault weapons ban and help for migrants, making it hard to see him effectively reaching across the aisle in a body dominated by Democrats.
Martwick, a Chicago attorney who has served in the Senate since 2019 after six years in the House, points with pride to his record of bipartisanship. He speaks passionately and knowledgeably about much-needed ethics reforms, including an independent inspector general.
And while praising progress regarding Illinois’ fiscal health, Martwick emphasizes the importance of focusing on long-term planning and solutions, including paying down pension debt.
His experience, positions and priorities make him the best choice for his district. Martwick is endorsed.
