Fire damages two mobile on Elgin’s east side Wednesday

One person suffered minor injuries, and two mobile homes were significantly damaged Wednesday during a fire on the east side of Elgin.

The Elgin Fire Department responded just before 3 p.m. to the call in the 500 block of Sandra Lane and found both homes engulfed in smoke and flames.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about a half hour. The house where the fire began sustained severe fire, heat, and smoke damage throughout, rendering it uninhabitable. The neighboring home experienced extensive exterior damage on one side.

The occupant of the primary home was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Two cats were rescued from the adjacent house. No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Elgin Fire Department's Fire Investigation Team, with preliminary reports suggesting it may have been accidental.

Officials estimate the blaze caused more than $110,000 in damage to the two properties and their contents.
