The real threat to our system

The U.S. Justice Department recently charged the State of Alabama with illegally removing voters from its election rolls with under ninety days left until the general election, which is a violation of federal election law. The lawsuit asserts that both native-born and naturalized citizens were improperly taken off the rolls.

During this election cycle there have been numerous reports of similar attempts by various authorities and special interest groups to block legally registered voters, or to make it harder for certain Americans (i.e., those perceived to be more likely to vote for Democrats) to exercise their right to vote. Such efforts are occurring despite the scarcity of evidence of actual fraudulent registrations or voting. The intent is to skew election results to favor Republican candidates, as well as to reinforce the anti-immigration scare tactics of Donald Trump.

It would seem that one of the biggest threats to free and fair elections is not people voting who shouldn’t be; it is partisan manipulation of the system to tip the scales.
