Man charged with stealing boat, then trying to sell its motor
An Antioch-area man is charged with stealing a boat and then trying to sell its parts.
Barry J. Hackleman, 54, of the 27500 block of West Grass Lake Road, was arrested Friday. He is charged with two counts of felony theft, according to a press release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
According to release, someone reported Thursday that their 1995 Regal Valanti boat was stolen from outside a business in the 26900 block of West Grass Lake. It was on a trailer, awaiting winterization by the business.
A deputy reviewed video footage from traffic surveillance cameras and saw the boat being towed by a white GMC pickup truck. The cameras did not capture the license plate, however, the release said.
Friday, a marina on Route 173 reported that a man tried to sell them an outboard motor for far below its market value. The deputy reviewed the business’ surveillance video and saw the pickup truck, according to the release.
The deputy found the pickup Friday night near Route 173 and Third Avenue, being driven by Hackleman. The motor was found in the bed of the truck. The truck also had other property from the boat, the release said.
Hackleman would not say where the boat was, the release said.
Deputies have not found it.
Hackleman is on pretrial release on a battery charge. Lake County prosecutors have filed a petition to revoke his release. He appeared in First Appearance Court Saturday morning and is due back in court Monday.
