Reading Power appoints Katie Taylor as director of development

Reading Power, Inc., a Lake County-based nonprofit dedicated to early literacy, announces the appointment of Katie Taylor as new director of development. With extensive experience in nonprofit management and a deep commitment to educational equity, Katie will spearhead the organization’s fundraising initiatives and engagement strategies.

Most recently, Katie led independent consulting company, Propel Social Good, where she collaborated with various social service, government, philanthropic, and youth nonprofit organizations. Her expertise includes outcomes measurement, program development, grant writing, and strategic planning, making her an asset to Reading Power as the organization aims to enhance literacy programs for children in under-resourced schools.

Previously, Katie was the director of development at Northwestern Settlement, where she played a pivotal role in securing over $2.5 million in new and continued annual funding and successfully launched and secured $14 million over three years through capital campaign. Her leadership in transitioning programming to an outcomes-focused model allowed the organization to demonstrate impactful returns on philanthropy to donors.

“We are thrilled to welcome Katie to the Reading Power team,” said Lisa Bulzoni, CEO. “She is a mission-driven change agent whose vision, creativity, and innovation will be instrumental to the continued expansion of our programs and community involvement.”

Katie is an active member of Chicago Women in Philanthropy and serves on the board of directors for both Caring Women’s Connection and PADS Lake County.

“I’m thrilled to join Reading Power and to contribute to an organization that’s making such a meaningful difference in children’s lives,” Taylor remarks. “Together, I look forward to strengthening our efforts to foster literacy skills, confidence, and a genuine love for reading — opening doors to brighter futures for the students we serve.”

Reading Power is dedicated to accelerating children’s literacy learning and to developing their love for reading and writing. Under Katie’s leadership, the organization aims to enhance its reach and impact.

Since 2003, Lake County-based nonprofit Reading Power has provided literacy tutoring to over 5,300 children in preschool through second grade in North Chicago, Palatine, Waukegan, Wheeling and Zion. More than 425 trained volunteer tutors provide one-to-one tutoring for children, helping them accelerate literacy gains, develop confidence, and embrace a love of reading and writing.
