Girls golf: Team effort lifts Benet to regional crown

Benet had four of the top six scores Tuesday to win the Class 2A West Chicago girls golf regional at St. Andrews.

Benet finished at 314, seven shots better than runner-up Naperville North. St. Francis edged Wheaton Warrenville South, 350-354, to claim the third spot for next Monday’s Rockford Boylan sectional at Atwood Homestead Golf Course.

Sophomore Madelyn Maldonado led Benet with a 77. Audrey Wake, Kerregan Reilly and Isabelle Grane all were two shots back at 79.

Naperville North junior Addyson Ciganek won the regional with a 75, shooting an even-par 35 on the front and 39 on the back.Teammate Georgia Riley was third with a 78.

Bridget Brennan led St. Francis with an 86.

Hinsdale Central regional: The host Red Devils won going away with a 301 at Willow Crest Golf Club. Downers Grove North (333) and Downers Grove South (355) also advanced.

Hinsdale Central senior Elyssa Abdullah shot a 69 to earn medalist. Teammate Toral Bhatt shot 72 and Downers Grove South’s Miah Wanserski had a 73.

Providence regional: In Class 1A regional action, Rosary (380) finished second and Montini (385) third behind Nazareth (338) at Woodruff Golf Course.

May Thomas led Rosary with an 89 followed by Alivia Brennan’s 92. Senior Annika Bartell paced Montini with an 82, just two shots out of first place.

Aurora Central Catholic’s Natalia Salazar (83) and Nora Schwartz (86) both qualified as individuals for next week’s sectional at Prairie View in Byron.
