Surrender sanctimony, support video gambling

I lived a mile from Arlington Park for 35 years, and I watched as the park slowly died, as the state denied their request for slots until it granted their request too late to make a difference.

In our neighboring state, Iowa, their horse race industry was declining in the 1990s, until they allowed slots. The introduction of the slots allowed them to continue.

The Naperville City Council should act quickly, before they lose these businesses that make Naperville Naperville.

Why is Naperville getting sanctimonious now? They allow the sale of marijuana at a much greater risk to the public than video gambling. The City Council should not wait until their businesses are lost to get around to allowing video gambling.

These borderline businesses will not significantly affect the amount of gambling in DuPage County or in Naperville. Most residents of Naperville are mobile enough to drive across the street to gamble, whether it is to unincorporated DuPage County or Naperville. Keeping the ordinances in place only hurts these struggling businesses.

Here is a vote for common sense: Allow the video gambling.
