Boys golf: Tee, Fremd go low to claim MSL championship

Fremd was the center of the Mid-Suburban League golf universe Thursday.

Both the Fremd boys and girls golf teams posted solid victories to claim their respective MSL tournament and conference titles.

On the boys’ side, most of the Fremd team were infants the last time the Vikings won the boys’ championship back in 2008. The boys erased that at Arlington Lakes with a score of 281. Fremd finished six strokes better than Barrington’s 287 and 13 strokes better than Hersey’s 294.

Those three teams came into the conference meet tied for the conference title with each school posting a 10-1 regular season mark. The MSL tournament championship enabled the Vikings to break that logjam.

“We had a quiet van ride to the driving range this morning,” Fremd coach Ryan Moreau said. “Everyone was focused and ready to go.”

Fremd’s Rayden Tee got off to a fabulous start and then played solid from there. The junior birdied the first two holes and went on the win medalist honors with a two-under par 66.

“I just had a good day out there,” Tee said. “I started out hot and that helped with the momentum for the day.”

Each of the remaining five Fremd golfers all shot in the 70’s. Brighton Mao shot a 71 while Jack Bell and Preston Cheng each shot a 72. Nathan Delaney, who shot a 74 and Brian Sim’s 79 showed the depth of Fremd’s team.

“Once we got to the course and loosened up, I think we opened so strong that everyone saw their teammates doing so well and we just caught fire.” Moreau said.

Barrington played well, but not quite well enough to overtake the Vikings according to its coach Bryan Tucker.

“I am proud of kids and they battled all day,” Tucker said. “We had a nice round. It’s not like we didn’t do what we needed to do. Fremd just played great.”

The Broncos were led by William Lange, who shot an even par 68. Sam Uutala carded a 70, Drew Schavenberg scored a 71 and Ben Bundrant had a 78.

“I scrambled to keep it in the 60’s,” said Lange, who is a senior. “I had some mistakes that just added up. But shooting even par anytime in the postseason is not going to hurt.”

Hersey was still blue to claim the MSL East title with their third place finish.

“We had some strong practice rounds out here,” Hersey coach Dan Caporusso said. “People think that the Lakes is a pushover. But this was revenge of the Lakes.”

The Huskies were led by Owen Spokas, who shot a 71. Kyle Carlson had a 73 while Henry Esposito and Danny Dicola each shot a 75.

“Our game could have been better,” Carlson said. “We did win the East, so that is a good thing. I think we can do better and we have regionals coming up.”

Palatine was fourth with a 297. The Pirates were led by Kasey May’s 68, who tied for second overall. William Slatkay’s 74, Bryson Landerman’s 77 and Darrin Dick’s 78 paced the Pirates.

Conant was fifth with a 302. The Cougars were led by Antonio Gutierrez with a 73 and Peyton Kittivat’s 75.

Prospect was sixth with a 306. Cole Bielecki’s 71 and Matthew Mundt’s 74 led the Knights.

Hoffman Estates’ Jayden Lim also scored well shooting a 71.
