The Atrium at Oak Crest marks its 120th anniversary

The Atrium at Oak Crest in Elgin celebrated a successful ribbon cutting with supporters, residents, friends, staff and Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce and Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce members and ambassadors for its 120th anniversary and new memorial rock garden dedication on Sept. 12.

Among the guests at the event were Elgin City Council member Steve Thoren, chaplain Dave Rohlwing, and former longtime employee Margaret Walter, who now resides in Florida. Also in attendance were family members of current and former residents.

“This is a very special place full of Elgin history,” Thoren said. “My godmother lived here in this historic home built by the Lord family, the same family which carries Elgin’s Lords Park name.”

Walter added, “I worked here at Oak Crest for over 40 years and it has been like a home to me. My parents also happily lived here for many years.”

Executive director Susan Cincinelli thanked the chambers and guests for their continued support. “I am proud of the people — past, present, and future — who have made Oak Crest their home. With our loving family of staff and volunteers, too, we are blessed with this magical combination. Our eye is always on our legacy and future. The legacy of an organization is based on meeting unmet needs in the community as our founders did 120 years ago.

“Nothing could be more meaningful to celebrate our long history in the community than to once again look to the future with that same mission of meeting unmet needs,” Cincinelli continued. “We are very thrilled to once again be looking toward expanding our mission of dignity and caring for adults. An announcement of our news will be made by the end of the year.”

Following the dedication, light refreshments were served and guests were entertained by Brian Castillo, a talented local vocalist and guitarist. He is very popular with Oak Crest residents as he performs for them in the cozy downstairs authentic Irish cellar pub on a regular basis.
