Cook and Lake County football roundup: Gould wins home debut at Rolling Meadows

Rolling Meadows made new head coach Robbie Gould’s first home game at Robert A. Hoesse stadium a memorable one.

Sophomore Luke Harvey rushed for 203 yards on 18 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Mustangs outlasted Glenbrook North 42-34 Friday.

Harvey’s performance was the main cog in a Mustangs running attack that amassed 372 yards. Vinny Piccolo had 119 yards on 13 carries and added a touchdown. Quincy Johnson threw a touchdown pass to Arman Lepuzanovic for Rolling Meadows (2-1).

Lake Forest 38, Warren 7: Warren (1-2, 0-1) lost its second consecutive road game as the Blue Devils opened up North Suburban Conference play. Lake Forest (3-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 31-0 lead. Aaron Stewart scored the lone touchdown for Warren with four minutes to play on a one-yard run.

Fremd 65 Highland Park 7: Fremd broke a school record for points in a game as the Vikings (3-0) rolled. Johnny O’Brien was 17-of-21 passing for 260 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those went to Brennan Saxe (8 receptions, 108 yards) covering 30, 13 and 35 yards. Saxe also had a 35-yard punt return. Jayden Faulkner had touchdown runs of 27 yards and 1 yard while David Vinson had a 27-yard touchdown run. Jay Box had a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Lake Zurich 40, Waukegan 12: After opening the season with a pair of losses, Lake Zurich bounced back in a huge way. The Bears (1-2, 1-0) bolted to a 41-0 halftime lead and cruised from there. Cole Kenyon threw a pair of touchdown passes, a 28-yarder to Reece Katsenberger and 15-yarder to Jackson Piggott. Lake Zurich also got a 7-yard touchdown run from John Howe and a 10-yard touchdown run by Alex Pirone. Reid Pfeiffer tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Nikolay Oblakov.

Grant 23, North Chicago 7: Tyler Zdon (21 carries, 107 yards) had a 3-yard touchdown run to get things started for the Bulldogs. Matthew Gipson (11-of-19, 140 yards) tossed a three-yard scoring pass to Ethan Willey and Ethan Koza had a tackle for safety as the Bulldogs built a 16-7 first quarter lead. Logan Meyers then had a fourth quarter interception return for a touchdown to seal it for Grant (2-1, 1-0).

Maine West 27 Conant 19: Maine West (3-0) rallied from an early 13-0 deficit to remain unbeaten. Maks Makota scored four touchdowns on runs of four, two, six and 24 yards to lead the Warriors (3-0) offensively. Dante Hicks had a key interception and 8 tackles while Alex Hornish also had an interception. Conant got a pair of touchdown passes from Tyler Marchese to Jacob Serrano for 36 yards and a 42-yarder to Bradley Biedke. Jalen Davis had a four-yard touchdown run for the Cougars (0-3).

Mundelein 17 Zion-Benton 6: Logan Young tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Carson Cooper as Mundelein (3-0, 1-0) built a 17-0 first half lead. Brody Paluch had a one-yard touchdown run for the Mustangs.

Schaumburg 49, Niles North 21: Schaumburg (3-0) continued its fast start as the Saxons piled up 514 yards of offense. Ray Black (17-of-23, 270 yards) fired four touchdown passes and ran for another. Black threw a trio of them to Javonte McCoy (7 receptions, 110 yards) covering 7, 10 and 22 yards. Black also threw an 80-yarder to Nathan Barnitz. Jeff Alther (18 carries, 90 yards) had touchdown runs of one and six yards.

Wheeling 27, Vernon Hills 7: Wheeling (1-2) picked up its first win of the season. The Wildcats trailed 7-0 before Grant Scheuerman had a 65-yard touchdown run. Scheuerman then caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Justin Ghibea. The quarterback was not done. Ghibea would follow with touchdown runs of three and 30 yards to put the game away. Giuseppe Urso rushed for 107 yards and Colin McMurray had a 13-yard touchdown run for Vernon Hills (0-3).

Deerfield 28, Buffalo Grove 7: Buffalo Grove (0-3) fell behind 21-0 and couldn’t recover. Dylan Spedale threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Alex Baranas for the only score for the Bison.

Grayslake Central 36, Lakes 33: Grayslake Central (2-1, 1-0) won in a shootout against Lakes (1-2, 0-1) in the Northern Lake County opener.

Antioch 63, Round Lake 0: Antioch (2-1, 1-0) won its second consecutive game in convincing fashion. Round Lake fell to 0-3, 0-1.

Hinsdale South 38, Leyden 0: Leyden (1-2, 0-1), which opened the season with a pair of wins, was blanked in the West Suburban Gold Conference opener.

Niles West 20, Elk Grove 0: Elk Grove struggled to get things going offensively and fell to 0-3.
