GreenMan Theatre opens its 21st season with ‘Miss Holmes,’ a Sherlockian mystery

Rehearsals are in full swing for GreenMan Theatre’s production of “Miss Holmes,” the opening main stage show of its 21st season.

Written by Christopher M. Walsh, the play is based on characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and unfolds amid the stodgy Victorian era in 1881.

“Miss Holmes” tells the story of a newlywed wife who looks for help after receiving an anonymous note. She turns to investigators Miss Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Dorothy Watson who work together to uncover the secrets surrounding a corrupt police inspector whose wives have a habit of turning up dead. Set in London, where gender roles are rigidly defined, this pair of unconventional women dare to challenge societal norms by providing an unusual but necessary service. “Miss Holmes” reexamines the world of the iconic figures Sherlock and Holmes — should their characters be portrayed as females in the 1880s.

“The audience will be fascinated to see the Victorian Era’s gender norms being challenged and how the two lead female characters evolve during the show,” said Becca Easley, “Miss Holmes” director. “What’s more, the show moves quickly as the characters pop in and out of the narrative.”

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 20 to Oct. 6, in the First United Methodist Church building, 232 S. York St. in Elmhurst.

Tickets are $20 or $15 for children and seniors, age 65 or older. Talk backs with the cast will be held after the first and second Sunday productions.

Tickets can be purchased at ticketpeak.co/GMTT, or at the door prior to each performance providing the show is not sold out.
