Expanded football Top 20

First and 10

1. Downers Grove North (2-0)Next opponent: vs. Glenbard West

Comment: Caden Chiarelli was one of many stars for the Trojans in a 42-0 win over Downers Grove South, scoring four touchdowns on only five carries in a 42-0 victory — the 10th straight over their rival. Now comes the start of WSC Silver play vs. the Hilltoppers, hungry for a win at 0-2.

2. Barrington (2-0)Next opponent: vs. Glenbrook South

Comment: Finn Karam picked off three passes last week in a 41-32 win over Hersey. Calvin Jackson already has 8 touchdowns in two weeks, running for 190 yards last week. Coach Joe Sanchez has been impressed with the Broncos’ offensive line.

3. Maine South (1-1)Next opponent: at Hersey

Comment: Constantine Coines came up big through the air (208 yards) and on the ground (135 yards) against a strong Warren team, leading the Hawks to a 35-18 win. Their challenging schedule continues against Hersey and UCLA-bound QB Colton Gumino.

4. Cary-Grove (2-0)Next opponent: at McHenry

Comment: The Trojans hit a unique trifecta early in their 45-14 win over Crystal Lake Central, opening with a rushing touchdown, then blocking a punt and returning it for a score before a pick-six and a 21-0 lead with just one offensive TD. The Trojans’ schedule picks up in Week 4.

5. Batavia (2-0)Next opponent: vs. Lake Park

Comment: The Bulldogs begin DuKane Conference play against the 2-0 Lancers; Lake Park’s opponents are a combined 0-4. Among the highlights in Batavia’s win over South Elgin last week were a pair of sacks from Xavier Blanquel, and Zay Brown’s 5 catches for 110 yards and 2 TDs.

6. Warren (1-1)Next opponent: at Lake Forest

Comment: The Blue Devils kick off their North Suburban Conference schedule against the Scouts, who are coming off an impressive win over Carmel. Big plays hurt Warren in its loss to Maine South last week. Look for the Blue Devils to turn to their ball-control, ground game Friday.

7. York (2-0)Next opponent: vs. Downers Grove South

Comment: Quarterback Bruno Massel got the Dukes off to a good start in a win over Plainfield North with a pair of early touchdown passes. York will try to keep building momentum going into a key stretch coming up in weeks 6-8 vs. Downers Grove North, Glenbard West and Lyons.

8. Fremd (2-0)Next opponent: Highland Park

Comment: The Vikings and QB Johnny O’Brien are rolling. Fremd has outscored its two opponents 76-9, while O’Brien threw for 298 yards last week on 17-of-25 passing. Look for more big numbers against Highland Park who enters the game 0-2.

9. Naperville Central (2-0)Next opponent: vs. Andrew

Comment: The Redhawks play their first Southwest Valley Red Division game Friday, and they come in riding high after Gavin Ellison’s game-winning field goal beat Naperville North, 24-21. Aiden Clark rushed for 134 yards in the win, as Central rallied from 8 points down in the 4th quarter.

10. St. Charles North (2-0)Next opponent: vs. Wheaton North

Comment: It looks like another exciting DuKane Conference race is on the way, and it starts with this matchup of 2-0 teams. The Falcons have won a pair of 1-point games over strong opponents while the North Stars’ Aidan McClure had a night to remember last week blocking a punt, recovering 2 fumbles and returning an interception 45 yards for a touchdown.
