Reasons Democrats are hopeful
Lillian Fortman asked on Sept. 2 why the Obamas said, “Hope is making a comeback.” We Democrats are hopeful for many reasons.
We are hopeful that our democracy will survive. We are hopeful that we will continue to have the privilege of voting in future years. We are hopeful that the USA will continue to embrace diversity. We are hopeful that women will have freedom over their own bodies. We are hopeful that we will have the freedom to choose our religion. We are hopeful that our leaders will maintain good working relationships with our allies. We are hopeful that people will be respectful and kind to each other. We are hopeful that we can keep climate change to a minimum.
Yes, the Democrats were in charge and accomplished a lot in 2021-2022 — handled the pandemic successfully, passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law so that roads and bridges could be repaired, kept the country from going into a recession after the pandemic, passed the Chips and Science Act which brought production of microchips back home, cracked down on “junk fees” and overdraft charges, made unprecedented investments in mental health, rejoined NATO, and much, much more. (See “30 Things Joe Biden Did as President You Might Have Missed” and “The Monthly’s Presidential Accomplishment Index.”)
In the last two years, however, the Republican majority in the House was not interested in bipartisanship. A bipartisan bill regarding immigration at the southern border written by a Republican was passed by the Senate, but was never brought to the floor of the House because Trump wanted it to remain an issue for his campaign. Unfortunate.
Joe Biden is still a very capable president. There is no question about his finishing this term. Have you heard his latest speeches at the DNC and in Pittsburgh?
