Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights embraces aging positively in new series

This week, Lutheran Life Communities is launching an innovative “Aging Gracefully” sermon series. The nondenominational series, open to all, will explore the “Five G’s of Aging”: Gather, Grow, Give, Go and Gratitude, offering a fresh, spiritually infused approach to the later stages of life.

“We are excited to offer this series as many in our community seek positivity, inspiration and answers, especially as we age. Lutheran Life Communities invests in a spiritual program serving team members and residents of all backgrounds. We meet everyone where they are, dedicating each day to serving others with grace,” said Rev. Cory A. Wielert, corporate director of Spiritual Care/chaplain for Lutheran Life Communities.

The initiative comes as aging is often viewed negatively in Western societies. Lutheran Life Communities challenges this perception, drawing on scientific research highlighting spirituality's positive impact on health and aging outcomes. With five full-time chaplains, the organization is uniquely positioned to address the intersection of spirituality and aging.

The four-part series will take place at Lutheran Life Community chapels, including Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, at 800 W. Oakton St., each Sunday in September from 10 to 11 a.m., focusing on a different aspect of graceful aging:

1. Gather (Sept. 8): Emphasizing the importance of community and shared experiences

2. Grow (Sept. 15): Encouraging continued personal and spiritual development

3. Give (Sept. 22): Exploring the fulfillment found in generosity and service

4. Go and Gratitude (Sept. 29): Promoting active engagement and thankfulness

“We are thrilled to offer this sermon series to our residents and the broader community,” added Wielert. “The Five G’s of Aging provides a holistic approach to embracing the aging process with grace and dignity.”

Lutheran Life Communities, a faith-based nonprofit with over 130 years of history, serves more than 1,100 people across its four communities. Their mission of “empowering vibrant, Grace-Filled living across all generations” is exemplified in this upcoming series.
