Week 2 Expanded Top 20

First and 10

1. Downers Grove North (1-0) After reaching the Class 7A state championship game a year ago, the Trojans picked up where they left off in Week 1 with a 42-0 win over O’Fallon. Now comes their crosstown rival Downers Grove South who also is 1-0. The Trojans won this matchup a year ago 35-13.

2. Warren (1-0) Junior Aaron Stewart is coming off a remarkable 361-yard, 5-touchdown effort in a 55-26 win over Hersey. Now comes a Maine South team hungry for a win after losing to 8A power Lincoln-Way East last week.

3. Barrington (1-0) The Broncos scored on 8 of their first 9 possessions last week in a 64-21 win over South Elgin. QB Nick Peipert finished a perfect 10 of 10 for 240 yards and threw 4 touchdown passes in the first half. Now comes a second road game at a Hersey team trying to shake off a loss to Warren.

4. Maine South (0-1) The Hawks continue a killer schedule to start the season against Warren. Last week in a 49-22 loss to Lincoln-Way East, the Hawks dug themselves a 14-0 hole after one quarter and it didn’t get much better from there. Constantine Coines completed 15 of 25 passes for 149 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs.

5. Cary-Grove (1-0) The Trojans got off to a good start despite star RB Logan Abrams missing a 27-3 win over Burlington Central after getting banged up in practice last week. Abrams did dress for the game and is day to day heading into Week 2 against Crystal Lake Central (0-1).

6. Batavia (1-0) So much for inexperience, the Bulldogs came up big last week in a 35-28 win at Glenbard West 35-28. Running back Nathan Whitwell led the way, carrying 35 times for 179 yards and 3 TDs, and earning “Ironman” and “flat out stud” labels from his coach Dennis Piron. Batavia hosts South Elgin on Friday.

7. York (1-0) The Dukes trailed 10-0 before scoring the final 28 points in a 28-10 win over Glenbrook South, giving coach Don Gelsomino a win in his debut. QB Bruno Massel tossed an 80-yard touchdown to Hayden Alexander. Plainfield North enters 0-1 after a 28-21 loss to Lockport.

8. Hersey (0-1) UCLA-bound quarterback Colton Gumino finished 11-for-25 passing for 178 yards with 3 interceptions in a 55-26 loss to Warren. The competition doesn’t get any easier this week against Barrington as coach Tom Nelson looks for better execution from his entire team.

9. Carmel (1-0) The Corsairs built a 49-0 halftime lead in a 56-13 win over Grayslake Central. Sophomore QB Tre Taylor tossed a pair of TD passes as Carmel totaled nearly 500 yards of offense. Lake Forest opened the season with a 35-12 win over Lakes, also pitching a first-half shutout up 28-0.

10. Fremd (1-0) Northwestern-bound Johnny O’Brien led the Vikings to one of the most impressive wins of Week 1, 31-0 over Lake Zurich. O’Brien threw for 259 yards and 3 touchdowns while the defense dominated forcing four turnovers and holding Lake Zurich to 112 yards of offense. Buffalo Grove is up next.
