Ask God to fill you with creative ideas

“In the beginning God created the heavens and earth.”

— Genesis 1 (NIV)

There was a time I thought I wasn’t very creative. I didn’t really understand there’s different levels and various ways of being creative. I’m sure you’ve had your creative doubts, but think about that twist of creativity you’ve displayed over the years.

I have learned the many ways I’ve used my creativity. In first grade I won a coloring contest. I must have been creative to do that. When we would have company, I would set the table, which included the placement and selection of centerpieces.

I loved picking up the colorful leaves in the fall, placing them in wax paper and tucking them in the pages of a book to press them. And when Christmas season came, you better look out. When my mother took down the decorations from the attic, I couldn’t wait to get at them and help with the decorating.

As a teen, I enjoyed fashion and went to modeling school. I never became a model, but I learned a lot of creative ways to wear clothes and apply makeup.

As a homemaker, I enjoyed — and still do — decorating my house. There was something that just soothed my senses whenever I would pick out a color of paint to match with a wallpaper pattern.

Now I like to bring it up to a whole new level by being creative in my spiritual time with God. After all, he is the Master Creator.

Sometimes I just like to sit outside and watch the clouds go by and think about God and heaven. Other times, I read a passage of scripture and think about how I can apply it to my life or vividly create the story it’s telling.

Then one of my favorites is singing a song to God. It might be a hymn or a short, snappy phrase I make up. When I’m not sure what to do, I often pick up a devotional book and randomly open it up to a page and read. And when I don’t feel like doing anything, I just simply sit in silence and pretend God is sitting with me.

And last, but not least, I have discovered when you need to get your spiritual creativity flowing, ask God to fill you with creative ideas and dreams.
