Hammel in Grammy Songwriters and Composers Wing
Lake County resident, Joan Hammel, has been inducted into the Grammy Awards Songwriters and Composers Wing.
The Songwriters and Composers Wing is a part of the Grammy Awards organization that is dedicated to those that craft songs and music pieces of all kinds. It fosters recognition of all genres and seeks fair compensation for its creators. It offers educational programs including panels, mixers, songwriting retreats and mentorship for recognition, networking and collaboration.
Joan attended schools in Lake County and is in the Warren High School Hall of Fame. She was also selected as Alumni of the Year for the College of Lake County and nominated for the State Community College Alumni Award. She has a long list of awards including an Emmy Award and various Who’s Who Awards, and was a nominee for both the Chicago Music Awards as Entertainer of the Year and a NAMMYs Nominee for her work with the National Park Service.
One of her most important credits is singing on the “America” song, which is a part of the 9-11 Museum in New York and is on the website for the Flight 93 Memorial in California. All proceeds from this recording have benefitted charities including firehouses and police in New York, 9-11 Memorials across the country, and Tuesday’s Child which benefits children who lost parents on 9-11.
She has served on the Board of Governors for the Grammy Awards in Chicago, and been an officer and committee Chair of the Education Committee. She is also a member of the Grammy’s Engineers and Producers Wing and serves as a Mentor with college students in the Grammy U program.
