Reminisce about your favorite Chicago bakeries at St. Charles library Sept. 10
Remember your first bite of a sweet roll or admiring your decorated birthday cake? Relive those memories while learning the history of Chicago's bakeries, some over 100 years old. Others are gone but not forgotten.
Join historian and Oakton College professor Cheryl Brown for her popular presentation, “Chicago's Sweet Bakeries Remembered,” on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the St. Charles Public Library.
Brown will share information about historic bakeries, top baking companies that made their home in Chicago, and the best places to buy mouth-watering, made-from-scratch baked goods.
Hear about Chicago’s sweet bakeries, including Dinkels, Jarosch, Gladstone, Lutz, Fingerhut, Roeser’s, Central Continental, Vesecky’s, and more. Learn about the history of some of Chicago’s top baking companies: Maurice Lenell, Burny Bros, Sara Lee, Fasano Pie, Salerno, Keebler, Heinemanns, Nabisco, and others. Samples will be provided.
Brown is a historian and professor of business and computer applications at Oakton College in Des Plaines. Her passion for remembering Kiddieland has brought her to keep the memories alive.
The program will begin at 1 p.m. in the Huntley Community Room of the library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. To register, visit scpld.org or call (630) 584-0076.
