Planning chief showed the value of talent

While it may not catch headlines, the impending retirement of Arlington Heights Director of Planning and Community Development Charles Witherington-Perkins is significant for our community. The impact of his meticulous planning, institutional knowledge and steady hand can be seen all over town. It is perhaps most evident in the development of our vibrant downtown, which has become the crown jewel of Arlington Heights during Charles’ 34 years of service.

Successful downtowns do not develop from thin air; neighboring communities are committing considerable financial resources to try to create what we have. Our downtown is a result of many small and large decisions made over decades, and Charles has been a contributor along the way. His successor will need to be ready to play a key role in keeping Arlington Heights ahead of the pack and, of course, navigating whatever becomes of the former Arlington Park.

Charles’ retirement is a good reminder that, while mayors and trustees are important, our village staff play a central role in developing policy recommendations and ensuring that our board has the information they need to act in our best interests.

Trustees come and go, but village staff are the constant. We should continue to invest in good talent and provide the resources needed to keep Arlington Heights a top-tier community. Charles, we thank you for your contributions and wish you the best in retirement.
