Evening falls on a hot, humid July night as the light from the Peace on Earth sign is reflected in the Fox River meandering through Batavia. The 12-foot sign hangs on the pedestrian bridge that crosses the Fox River and is meant to be a message of hope for passersby. Originally the idea of Craig Foltos, the Batavia business owner worked with volunteers to build the original letters for the sign. In 2011, the Batavia Park Board officially named the bridge “The Peace Bridge.” The Batavia Parks Foundation launched a community campaign in 2022 to raise $50,000 to replace the wooden letters with permanent ones featuring LED lighting.
