Semi hits bridge support beam on Route 41 in Gurnee

A semi-truck struck a bridge support beam on Route 41 in Gurnee Friday evening, causing its freight container to tip over and pin in another car.

No injuries were reported in the accident.

According to Gurnee police, the semi-truck, driven by a 31-year-old male from Cincinnati, was traveling southbound on Route 41 when it struck the bridge beam at the Canadian Pacific Railroad tracks around 7:35 p.m. Friday.

The truck’s freight container detached as a result from the impact and fell onto the roadway, pinning in a Toyota Corolla, driven by a 29-year-old woman from Wilmette.

The roadway was closed for two hours while crews worked to clear the scene.

The driver of the semi-truck was cited for exceeding the maximum vehicle height, police said.

Canadian Pacific Railroad was notified and inspected the bridge for damage.
