No injuries when SUV hits school bus in Virgil

Nobody was injured when an SUV, passing illegally, hit a school bus Wednesday in Virgil on the first day of school.

The Kane County sheriff says it happened at 6:40 a.m. on Meredith Road, south of Route 64. Three students were on the bus, which is owned and operated by the Kaneland school district.

The southbound bus had signaled and stopped to turn left into the parking lot of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at 5N539 Meredith Road. A Ford Explorer behind the bus passed in a no-passing zone, according to the sheriff.

It hit the front driver-side wheel and bumpers of the bus, disabling it.

A witness told deputies the bus had its yellow flashing lights activated, as well as its turn signal.

The SUV driver, a 58-year-old man from Belvidere, was given a ticket for passing in a no-passing zone.
