Kane County buying Elgin office building for health department
Kane County is buying a building to house health department services in Elgin.
The county board voted 19-3 Tuesday to spend $3 million for the building at 2170 Point Blvd.
Board members Michelle Gumz, Leslie Juby, and David Young voted “no.” Juby said after the meeting that she did not like the building.
The board did not discuss the purchase in open session.
Health Department Executive Director Michael Isaacson said that if the purchase goes through, the health department will move out of a rented space at 1750 Grandstand Place in Elgin. That space houses offices for workers, including those in the environmental services division. That division handles things such as inspections of private water wells, properties, restaurants and other food providers.
The new office would house them. There also would be room for the health department to offer clinical services to Kane County residents, such as immunizations and counseling.
In addition, it would have meeting spaces the county could lend to some of the non-profit service agencies with which it collaborates, Isaacson said.
“The more we can make one-stop-shopping for the public, that’s is preferable,” he said.
Clinical health services currently take place at the health department headquarters in Aurora.
