Daily Herald photo contest winners for July 2024
July saw a bevy of beautiful images submitted by our readers.
Taking top honors is 11-year-old Brooke Rotter of South Elgin with an amazing photo she took of her sister, Courtney, hanging upside down at the playground. It nicely captures the various shades of blue, topped off by her sister’s winning smile. Brooke says, “I titled it ‘Fun on the Firepole.’ I like how it is a different perspective of our time at the park.”
Elaine Newton of Wheeling is the second-place winner for the adorable image of a penguin checking out a visitor on an icy beach. Newton writes, “Love the curiosity of two different species checking each other out on the beautiful continent of Antarctica. Our walking parameters were very limited to maintain the pristine nature of this special place, but obviously the wildlife could go wherever they want!”
Lydia Campbell of Round Lake Beach comes in third for her photo capturing the warm rays of sunset bringing out the colors of the flower petals. Campbell says, “This dahlia just radiates beautiful colors!”
Rounding out the contest is this photo by Larry Caputo of Carol Stream of a song sparrow singing away while finding cover from the heat of the day in the leaves of these tall perennials. Caputo writes, “He was nestled in the leaf of a cup plant. We had to take a picture.”
