The importance of agritourism
We are small flower farm owners in Barrington Hills, advocating for a text amendment to support agritourism, particularly for our U-pick flower farm. This initiative supports sustainable farming practices and aims to enhance the local environment.
Supporting small farms like ours is crucial for recognizing the positive impact local agriculture has on our communities. Several Illinois municipalities have successfully integrated agritourism into their zoning laws. States like Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio have shown how robust laws can help small farms thrive while preserving rural character.
Local flowers have significant advantages over imported ones. They are fresher, have a smaller carbon footprint and bolster local ecosystems. Conversely, the imported flower industry brings high environmental costs, including transportation emissions and the use of harmful pesticides and fungicides. This industry is also linked to worker exploitation due to lax regulations.
Despite operating harmoniously for four seasons without any complaints about traffic, noise or aesthetics, our farm was shut down due to zoning issues. This highlights the need for clear agritourism support. By adopting this amendment, Barrington Hills can take a forward-thinking approach that benefits all — enhancing our environment, supporting sustainable agriculture and fostering community bonds.
We invite everyone who supports local farms and enjoys pockets of tranquility amidst the suburban sprawl to learn more about how you can support our initiative. Sow the seeds of change — support the idea that local farms can thrive in suburban spaces.
