Man who tried crashing into deputies gets 9 years in prison
An Aurora man was sentenced to 9 years in prison for trying to crash into Kane County sheriff’s deputies during a high-speed pursuit in 2022.
After a bench trial in June, a Kane County judge found Pedro A. Vilchis, 24, guilty of attempted murder and several other crimes connected with the August 2022 pursuit.
Vilchis was sentenced Thursday. He must serve 85% of his sentence and receives credit for 713 days already spent behind bars at the Kane County jail.
Vilchis was arrested in 2022 after deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on the silver Mazda Vilchis was driving on Orchard Road near Prairie Street in Aurora.
Authorities said Vilchis sped away from deputies, often exceeding 100 mph. He drove into oncoming traffic three times and tried crash head-on into pursuing deputies.
No one was injured in the chase, which lasted several minutes before deputies were able to pin the Mazda against a curb at Cedar and Wilder streets in Aurora.
“The irresponsible actions of Mr. Vilchis during the pursuit endangered innocent lives,” Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said. “This incident underscores the ongoing, crucial nature of our efforts in maintaining public safety.”
