We must still stand up for truth, reason
Democrats have no reason to call for “both parties to dial things down.” The attack on Donald Trump was no more political than most of our mass shootings across the country. It would appear that a pathetic young man took a gun that no reasonable parent would keep in the house, decided to act out against a world that had bullied and tormented him, and chose a high visibility target to make a bigger statement.
He was emotionally troubled, not a political fanatic. Biden calling on both parties to dial things down will certainly fall on deaf ears: the Republicans because they are the ones who rely on threats and violence to intimidate and spread their lies and Democrats because after four years of Trump selling the ideal that he actually won the last election and his delusional followers behavior in promoting this foolish notion, are sick and tired of treating their opponents as anything other than conspiracy fanatics.
May I suggest that this newspaper put out a singular headline: “Trump is lying about winning the 2020 election.” I know this. This newspaper knows this. Most Republican lawmakers and leaders know this, but are too afraid of their constituents to say so.
Arguing with everyday Republicans about this is like spitting into the wind. No wonder Democrats are cranky. The earth is round, It travels around the sun. The universe is billions of years old as is the earth. JFK Jr. is dead and will stay dead. Injecting bleach will not cure COVID. There is no “deep state.” Nor is QAnon real.
Republicans are going to continue to try to blame Democrats for the attempt on Trump's life. It fits their paranoid delusions so facts can be ignored. But I for one will not apologize for spending the last eight years standing up for truth and reason. Policy differences are one thing. Blatant lies unchecked are another.
