Dogs edge Lake Country behind Serwa
With the series tied at one a piece between the Chicago Dogs and the Lake Country DockHounds, both sides looked to grab the finale on Sunday.
Led by starting pitcher Kenny Serwa, the Dogs won 3-2.
Serwa entered the game coming off his best start of the season, throwing an eight-inning shutout with 11 strikeouts on July 16 against Milwaukee. Success continued for Serwa as he tossing eight innings of two-run ball while striking out eight.
The Dogs were held scoreless until the third inning. Johnni Turbo led off with a single to right field, later scoring on a Brantley Bell sacrifice fly.
The Dogs added two runs in the seventh inning on a Dusty Stroup RBI single and a Turbo sacrifice fly that scored Gus Sosa.
For a majority of the game, the Dogs struggled to find hits against Lake Country starting pitcher John Swanda. Swanda, the DockHounds’ winningest pitcher of all time, held a 7-1 record entering the game.
The Dogs’ Joey Marciano entered the game in the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He pitched a one-two-three inning to earn his 17th save of the season.
With the All-Star break starting in Kansas City, the Dogs will get a few days rest before heading to Lincoln, Neb. for a four-game series.
