Lake Park East hosts summer musical ‘The Little Mermaid Jr.’ July 18

Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” is playing at the Lake Park East Campus Dice Auditorium on Thursday, July 18, at 7 p.m.

The 60-minute musical is based on the 2008 Broadway production and the 1989 animated feature film.

The 2024 summer musical cast and crew involves more than 80 students from the community led by director Sara Keith, choreographer Mikayla Testolin (Lake Park High Class of 2022), vocal director Maggie Gordon (Lake Park High Class of 2023), and technical director Ethan Goldspiel.

Desperate to explore the shore above and be where the people are, curious mermaid Ariel (junior Kylene Murphy) makes a dangerous pact with the sea witch Ursula (senior Frankie Molfese) to become human — but there’s a catch.

She must win the heart of the charming Prince Eric (sophomore Brayden Cervantes) within three days, or she will belong to Ursula forever. With humor, adventure, and determination, Ariel navigates the complexities of love and self-discovery, ultimately learning the true meaning of sacrifice and staying true to yourself.

Director Sara Keith shared, “We are excited to bring ‘The Little Mermaid’ to Lake Park’s stage. The dedication of our camp leaders and our cast and crew of fifth- to 12th-graders, both inside and outside rehearsal, is amazing. Students work hard and have fun while learning the dances and songs and creating the props and publicity to prepare for our performance.”

“As a student-centered program, we have students vote on and select the musical for the next summer. Seeing the program grow from 50 students involved in last summer’s ‘Frozen’ camp to more than 80 students involved in ‘The Little Mermaid’ has been rewarding,” Keith said. “We are looking forward to sharing our performance with the community.”

A free performance of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.” is open to the public at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, in Lake Park High School’s East Campus Dice Auditorium, 600 S. Medinah Road in Roselle.
