Extra patrols planned at political events in Kane County, authorities say
There will be extra law enforcement patrols at political events in Kane County in the wake of the attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump, officials announced Monday morning.
“No one should have to risk their life to run for office, attend a political event, or advocate for a cause,” Sheriff Ron Hain and State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser said in a joint statement.
Hain said he asked leaders of the local Republican and Democratic organizations to give him a list of events leading up to the November election. Sheriff’s deputies will cover general events, but not fund-raisers, he said. His office will monitor social media for any indications of violence or retribution.
They will cover events all over the county, not just the unincorporated areas.
Meanwhile, Kane County Board Chairman Corinne Pierog released a statement expressing sadness over the shooting.
"No one should ever have to fear for their life while voicing their beliefs,“ Pierog stated. ”While we may debate the values of policies, violent action has no place within our political discourse.“
Pierog, Hain and Mosser are Democrats. Mosser and Pierog are running for re-election in November.
