Sheriff: Man dies after apparent medical emergency in jail

A 32-year-old man has died after he suffered an apparent medical emergency in the Cook County Jail’s residential treatment unit Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Ahmad Abed of Bridgeview was taken by Chicago Fire Department paramedics to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m., according to a statement from the county sheriff’s office.

The cause and manner of his death will be determined following an autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Abed was booked into custody on March 28, according to the sheriff’s office. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Abed was being held on multiple charges of violating an order of protection, according to court records.

The sheriff’s office requested an independent investigation through the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force, per protocol.
