Burlington Central graduate wins P.E.O. Scholarship
Eirini Karavasis, a senior at Central High School in Burlington, was selected to receive a P.E.O. STAR Scholarship from the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Eirini was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter DY of Elgin.
Eirini is a member of the National Honors Society as well as being Vice President of the Spanish Honors Society. She was President of her choir Chorale group as well as alto section leader in the school band. She has been chosen to serve on her high school student council for all four years.
Eirini has been a weekly volunteer for Fox Valley Food for Health as well as being involved with the local organizations, Feed My Starving Children and Northern Illinois Food Bank. All of this has been accomplished while maintaining a 4.4 grade-point average.
Eirini is a member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, active in their youth group and church school. She has been the co-chair for the last two years of their Christmas fundraiser.
Eirini will be attending University of Illinois in the fall where she will major in chemical engineering.
The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship was established in 2009 to provide scholarships for high school women who exhibit excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for success.
Since its inception in 1869, this nonprofit philanthropic organization has helped more than 116,000 women pursue educational goals by providing grants, scholarships, awards and loans.
Chapter DY of Elgin was chartered in 1933 and is one of 6,000 chapters with 205,000 members nationwide.
