St. Charles Kiwanis award grant to Fox Valley Special Recreation Association

The St. Charles Kiwanis Club awarded a $6,000 grant to representatives of the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association at a recent club meeting.

Executive Director Alex Engelhardt and Program Manager Brian Houzenga spoke to the club about their youth, teen, and adult programs, Special Olympics, and summer camps.

The Fox Valley Special Recreation Association, which extends from South Elgin to Oswego, empowers people with disabilities to live active, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

One of the major events in their summer schedule is “Day in the Park,” held in St. Charles' Pottawatomie Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10.

Since 2006, more than 40 St. Charles Kiwanis volunteers have been assisting camp counselors as more than 1000 campers are bused to the park to enjoy games, train rides, a magic show, slides, a dunk tank, photo booth, and more followed by refreshments. The large number includes campers from all area park districts, not only the FVSRA.

When it's all over, campers can look back on a fun-filled experience, and Kiwanis members can reflect on a very satisfying day.

The St. Charles Kiwanis Club meets at noon Tuesdays at the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave. in St. Charles. The club is always seeking service-minded members, and for more information, visit www.kiwanisofstcharles.org.
