Beryl weakens to tropical storm after sweeping into Texas as Category 1 hurricane

MATAGORDA, Texas — Beryl weakened to a tropical storm Monday hours after sweeping ashore in Texas, unleashing flooding and knocking out power to more than 1 million homes and businesses.

The National Hurricane Center said damaging winds and flash flooding will continue as Beryl continues pushing inland. Authorities say one man was killed in suburban Houston when a tree fell on a house, trapping him beneath debris.
