Gurnee firefighters rescue owl caught in soccer net
Firefighters quickly rescued an owl stuck in a soccer net Tuesday morning in Gurnee, allowing the bird to fly free.
At about 6:30 a.m., the Gurnee Fire Department sent three firefighters and an engine to respond to a special duty call at Ravinia Park: a resident walking a dog had spotted a creature entangled in a soccer net, according to Battalion Chief Tim Steffens.
Upon arrival, Steffens said the firefighters draped a jacket over the great horned owl to avoid potential pecking or scratching while they cut the large bird out of the net.
Firefighters were able to cut the owl free within minutes, allowing the bird to fly away uninjured, Steffens said.
