Critical health insurance deadline approaching

Illinois has been leading the nation in providing health coverage to individuals who have not traditionally qualified for Medicaid or other insurance plans due to their immigration status. Through the state’s Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults/Seniors programs (HBIA/HBIS), nearly 35,000 low-income Cook County residents aged 42 and older have been able to get health insurance, many for the first time.

Now, all HBIA/HBIS members are facing a deadline to renew — or lose — their health coverage. This process is an annual benefits eligibility check. The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) mailed paperwork to all HBIA/HBIS members in April. Members must submit the necessary paperwork before July 15 or they may lose coverage effective Aug. 1.

It is critical that we raise awareness about this upcoming deadline to ensure all eligible members successfully complete their paperwork and keep their health coverage. Because the popular HBIA/HBIS programs are at capacity, members can’t reapply for coverage if they miss their redetermination deadline. It is also important to note that all information provided during this process is used solely for program operation and is not shared for immigration enforcement purposes.

HIBA/HBIS members can find their renewal due date and confirm their correct mailing address at abe.illinois.gov in “Manage My Case” or by calling 1-800-843-6154. For in-person support in completing redetermination paperwork, members can go to countycare.com/redetermination/ to join an upcoming event.

Insured individuals have a lower rate of mortality, fewer serious illnesses, improved health outcomes and better overall well-being. With coverage through HBIA/HBIS, individuals can more easily access preventive health services, treatment for chronic or acute illnesses, and medications.

Please help us spread the word about HBIA/HBIS redetermination to ensure that our family, friends, and neighbors across Cook County can keep their health coverage and continue to lead their healthiest lives.
