Nonprofit volunteers host tree planting at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
Twelve volunteers with the nonprofit organization Dr. Shri Nanasaheb Dharmadhikari Pratishthan partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service for a tree planting event at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Visitor Center in Wilmington, Illinois, on June 2.
Going by its motto, "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (“The world is one family“), DSNDP aims to foster a brighter future by advocating for tree planting and conservation in collaboration with the U.S. government to address the demand for reforestation, regulate environmental temperature, prevent soil erosion, and promote biodiversity. These initiatives include planting seeds/bulbs/saplings/trees, seed ball making, mulching, watering, weed management, removal of invasive plant species, leaf litter cleanup, etc.
The volunteers planted and watered over 1,660 native trees with nine species like spotted Joe Pye weed and wild bergamot. Earlier, the organization hosted two programs with 23 volunteers who planted 2,690 trees.
Such initiatives are an integral part of DSNDP’s nationwide tree planting and conservation drive, reaching across 15 states and 33 cities. Over 580 volunteers planted 17,650 trees and collected more than 14,000 pounds of garbage and weeds, resulting in significant cost savings for the government.
