Barrington appoints new director of cultural affairs

Barrington has hired Brian Coyle as its new director of cultural affairs, a role that includes overseeing programming at Barrington’s White House and other cultural events hosted by the village.

Coyle, described by village officials as an accomplished conductor, educator and arts leader, will succeed Rollin Potter, who has served as the founding cultural director for the past 10 years.

“Brian's arrival marks an exciting new chapter for us,” Village President Karen Darch said Monday in an announcement of Coyle’s hire. “His deep understanding of the arts and his commitment to cultural development make him an ideal leader to continue the legacy of excellence established by Rollin Potter.”

Doyle received his doctorate of musical arts from Michigan State University and served as a professor and chair at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, for 26 years. His career includes service as the executive director of the Civic Music Association of Des Moines and a co-founder of the International Association of Jazz Arrangers and Composers.

“It is an honor to join such a dynamic and thriving community,” Coyle said in the announcement. “I look forward to working with the talented team at Barrington's White House, the Barrington Cultural Commission, and with local community members to continue creating meaningful cultural experiences for the Barrington area.”

Since Barrington's White House opened in 2015, Potter has nurtured partnerships with art associations, Chicago-area universities and other expert organizations to strengthen the cultural programming offered there, officials said.

He will be recognized for his hard work and commitment at a farewell reception from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Barrington’s White House, 145 W. Main St. The event is open to the public.
