Loss of stables will be felt

The May 23 cartoon regarding abrupt plans to close Palatine Stables should beg the reader to ask the question why. Why is the Palatine Park District closing a facility that is a revenue producer and has remained in the black in recent years? Park District facilities such as playgrounds, bike trails, tennis courts and pickleball courts are used by many residents and nonresidents and bring in almost no revenue. Yet each year thousands of dollars are spent to maintain and replace these amenities.

Why are the same standards of yearly upkeep not applied to the Palatine Stables, especially when the financial benefits to the Park District are so favorable? The loss to our community will be felt deeper than the financial loss felt in the Park District if the board’s decision to close does not get reversed.

The Stables are part of what makes Palatine so unique. It is iconic to drive down Dundee Road and see any of the more than 60 horses who call the stable their home out grazing on the grass.

The tagline of your comic needs to be changed to read “Why are you closing my home? Please reconsider your decision.”
