One injured in Wheeling house fire

One person was injured Wednesday morning when fire broke out on the deck of a Wheeling home, fire officials said.

According to the Wheeling Fire Department, firefighters called to the residence in the 300 block of Surrey Road at 9:03 a.m., arrived less than five minutes later and began battling the exterior blaze.

Other crews went inside the home to confirm its occupants had escaped and check to see if flames had extended to the interior.

One resident was taken to an area hospital and no firefighters were injured, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Wheeling Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District. Officials said firefighters’ quick response from the new Fire Station 42, 175 McHenry Road, prevented the fire from spreading inside the home.
