Mandela Act addresses criminal justice issues
I’m writing to express my support for the Nelson Mandela Act, (HB4828/SB2257), legislation currently under consideration in Illinois. As a faith leader, I support this effort on behalf of the humanity of our incarcerated citizens.
The Mandela Act redresses injustices within our criminal justice system including prolonged solitary confinement. Solitary confinement is a practice that inflicts severe psychological harm on individuals, often exacerbating existing mental health issues and leading to long-term trauma. It is condemned by human rights organizations and experts but continues in prisons across the United States, including here in Illinois.
The Mandela Act is not just about the humane treatment of prisoners; it is also about creating safer communities. Prolonged solitary confinement can increase the likelihood of violent behavior both inside and outside of prison walls. By implementing more humane practices, we can build a safer society for all
I urge our legislators to pass the Nelson Mandela Act and stand on the right side of history. Together, we can create a criminal justice system that serves the interests of justice and promotes the well-being of our communities. Please call or write your state representative or senator to urge passage of this bill immediately.
