SALUTE prepping for Memorial Day weekend two-mile walk/four-mile run

Registration is filling up for SALUTE INC.’s Memorial Day weekend Walk and Run on May 25 — a tradition 21 years in the making. But, this year, both the location and format will change.

Historically, runners could participate in a 5K or 10K walk/run near downtown Arlington Heights. This year, however, runners and walkers will race around the beautiful Lake Arlington (2201 Windsor Drive). The event will feature a two-mile Honor Walk and a four-mile Remember Run.

“This event has historically been very important when it comes to connecting with our community and spreading the word about our cause,” said SALUTE Executive Director Mary Beth Beiersdorf. “We knew we wanted to continue the tradition, but decided it was time to shake things up and change up the course for our runners and walkers.”

The Palatine-based nonprofit provides short-term mental, emotional and financial support to military veterans and their families during times of need. Funding often helps pay for rent, car payments, food or other items so veterans can focus on getting the care they need to transition back to civilian life.

This year, for the first time, SALUTE is offering the opportunity to order “In Honor Of” and “In Memory Of” yard signs to commemorate the veterans in their life. The “Honor” sign will celebrate a special military member or veteran while the “Remember” signs will celebrate the memory of a loved one who served in the military. Both will be placed along the course for all participants to see. Signs can be ordered via the registration link up until May 9.

The SALUTE, INC. Honor and Remember Walk/Run will take place on May 25 at 8 a.m. The event is open to participants of all ages, including kids, and SALUTE encourages family and workplace team participation.

As always, packet pickup, which includes a lightweight hat that runners and walkers will appreciate on sunny days, will take place at Runners High ‘n Tri in downtown Arlington Heights on May 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Same day registration and packet-pick-up will also be available on Saturday May 25, beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Registration is now open, and signs can be purchased at
