The important role of speech pathology careers
It was very inspiring to read your article “Elmhurst University hosts panel discussion on speech language pathology careers” because it showed what a promising field speech language-pathology is and how important a component it is to the U.S. health care equation. Just two weeks before, I heard a negative story on April 11 on Northern Public Radio (WNIJ) titled “Why So Many Illinois Speech Therapists Say It's Hard to See a Future in the Field They Love.” Thank you for debunking that April 11 news story.
I hope that many young people interested in a career pathology will attend as the panel is impressive. I am glad that Dominika Matuzik, an expert in bilingual speech therapy, will be there because so many children come from bilingual households.
Stuttering is just one speech problem and the website of the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation (www.StutteringHelp.org) offers a downloadable brochure titled “Stuttering and the Bilingual Child.” This website also offers many free resources for people who stutter of all ages and has a Spanish-language version of their site for the Hispanic community.
Once again, thank you for publishing an article not only highlighting the many opportunities in the field of speech-language pathology, but also the importance of speech therapists.
