Basement fire leaves home uninhabitable near Elgin

No injuries were reported after fire broke out Wednesday evening in the basement of a home near Elgin, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to the single-story, ranch-style home on the 12N200 block of Berner Drive just after 5:45 p.m.

Bartlett Fire Protection District officials said two residents were sleeping inside the home at the time of the fire, but were able to escape before firefighters arrived, despite the lack of working smoke detectors.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation and the home was deemed uninhabitable due to smoke damage.

No damage estimate was available Thursday.
