Hoffman Estates mayor honors Barrington ranch on National Therapy Animal Day

Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod recognized National Therapy Animal Day on Tuesday by presenting a village proclamation to SOUL Harbour Ranch in neighboring Barrington, billed as the region’s most experienced comprehensive animal therapy program.

The ranch at 22093 Countryside Lane is home to therapy dogs, cats, horses, miniature horses, miniature donkeys, miniature pigs, and a recently arrived rabbit.

The proclamation urges all Hoffman Estates residents and businesses to observe the special day created by Pet Partners to recognize and honor therapy animals, raise awareness, and educate others about the role they play in enhancing the health and well-being of people.

The day is also intended to honor the thousands of dedicated handlers who volunteer their time and compassion during visits to hospitals, pediatric care units, schools and assisted living facilities.

“Scientific research shows that interacting with therapy animals, such as dogs and horses, lowers anxiety, reduces stress, relieves depression, increases mental stimulation, lowers blood pressure, and diminishes overall pain,” the proclamation reads.

The variety of people who regularly benefit from interactions with therapy animals include veterans, seniors, patients, students, and those approaching end of life.

Hoffman Estates’ belief in these benefits is stronger than words on paper. The village has a therapy dog in training named Charlie for its health and human services department, and a comfort dog named Oakley in the police department.
