Buffalo Grove police offering free gun locks to promote safe storage

The Buffalo Grove Police Department teaming with Project ChildSafe to promote gun safety in the community by offering free gun locks.

Project ChildSafe a national gun education program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to promote gun safety and responsible firearms ownership. The group notes that gun locks can keep children from misusing a gun and serve as a deterrent to thieves.

Buffalo Grove Crime Prevention Officer Amy Cholewa said the locks along with a manual are available at the police station, 46 Raupp Blvd.

“It’s something we want to put out there to the public, so that they know if they have a weapon in their home, it’s very important, especially if you have children, that you have it locked up appropriately,” she said.

The police department also is offering educational materials about safe gun ownership and how to talk to children about weapon safety.

Cholewa said the department’s community relations unit also will make the locks available at community events. The department will not be checking IDs, so nonresidents can take advantage as well.

“It’s important not only to keep Buffalo Grove safe,” she said. “We want everyone safe.”
